Psychedelic Spiral Screensavers

Electropaint™ was originally written for the SGI by David Tristram.

Apparently, the name Electropaint is a Trademark of Tristram Visual.

Here is a concise history of Electropaint.

Unfortunately Electropaint only runs on the SGI, but you can see it here in this YouTube video:

Similar Screensavers for Mac OS X

StonerView

StonerView by Andrew Plotkin and Tommaso Pecorella. It was one of the first spiral screensavers available for the Mac and even runs under Mac OS Classic (under Setting Sun).

ElectropaintOSX

ElectropaintOSX from Lloyd's Lounge. This LGPL release comes with source code and can help you learn about writing OpenGL Screensavers on the Mac. This is a must see if you are new to writing Mac OS X screensavers in OpenGL. So is this article from CocoaDevCentral.

IGS Twisted

IGS Twisted by Brad Anderson. Their website says: One of the major design concepts in IGS Twisted is to minimize CPU usage. If your computer is processing data, rendering, or computing, then IGS Twisted won't detract from that crunch time.

VisionSynth

VisionSynth by Comet Way is the most recent offering, adding some uniqueness and variety while retaining many of the familiar movements common to spiral screensavers. VisionSynth is an amazingly fast and smooth screensaver when run on OpenGL supported hardware supporting up to 60fps.
